Series Snapshot ~ 4/9/2026
Welcome to the Series Snapshot, a weekly deep dive into the shows topping the streaming charts.
Netflix’s One Piece ends its three-week-streak as the platform’s most watched, as the new season of XO, Kitty takes the top spot. XO, Kitty is a spin off of the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before film trilogy, and comes from creator Jenny Han, who also helmed the massively successful Summer I Turned Pretty series. Now in its third season, XO, Kitty is a Gen-Z high school rom-com in which young matchmaker Kitty Song Covey (Anna Cathcart) moves from Oregon to South Korea to attend school with her long distance boyfriend Dae-Heon, (Choi Min-yeong) only to find he has another girlfriend, Yuri (Gia Kim). It turns out Yuri is secretly dating another girl at school, and has a staged relationship with Dae to throw off her mother’s suspicions of her daughter’s queerness. In proper Jenny Han fashion, love triangles rotate on and off throughout the series, and the show’s target demographic can’t get enough. Often called a guilty pleasure series by viewers and critics, the show’s most defining characteristic is both its strength and weakness: cringe-on-purpose writing and directing. For some, this style of humor is an immediate turn-off, but others revel in the intentional awkwardness.
Hulu’s Paradise continues to hold high viewership after its season finale last week. Made famous for its risky genre-jump from its first to second season, season two left viewers with another big shift, first going from political murder mystery, to post-apocalypse, and now into hard sci-fi, hinting at time-travel and quantum AI. Paradise’s success is also attributed to the stand-out performances of Sterling K. Brown, who plays secret service agent Xavier Collins, James Marsden, the show’s fictional president, and Enuka Okuma, who plays Xavier’s resilient wife Teri. The core cast brings immense emotional nuance and authenticity to a high-concept show, grounding and anchoring the story and writing. According to series creator Dan Fogelman, production on Paradise season three is already underway, and will be the final installment in the series.
The second season of HBO’s groundbreaking medical drama The Pitt is nearing the final stretch, with the penultimate episode set to air tonight and a finale on April 16th. HBO also partnered with Alamo Draft House to offer early screenings of the finale on April 13th at select locations. The Pitt’s run has truly been lightning in a bottle and a much needed refresher to the sometimes overly-formulaic counterparts in the genre. Slowing down the pacing of each episode to a minute-by-minute pace brings an unparalleled level of realism and tension that has proved gripping for audiences, and with the exception of series lead Noah Wyle, most in the cast were unknowns when the series premiered, furthering the feeling that these are real people and not big hollywood names. Medical practitioners continue to praise the series for its attention to detail and accurate portrayal of life in the emergency room. The Pitt also stars Katherine LaNasa, Patrick Ball, and Taylor Dearden, and was created by R. Scott Gemmill.
Amazon’s animated comic-book adaptation Invincible holds strong at the top of the chart for a second week, following a strong three-episode debut and high scores from critics. Invincible now follows a regular weekly release schedule with season four’s finale set for April 22nd. The new season receives praise for its improvements over season three, which suffered from inconsistent pacing and a lot of corner cutting on animation, an initial big draw for the series. Fans are also excited as Invincible enters a beloved plot-arc: “The Viltrumite War”, which will see the series expand into a grander cosmic scale as protagonist Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) grapples with his own moral compass and code of ethics. Invincible boasts a star studded cast, with regulars J.K. Simmons, Sandra Oh, Seth Rogen, Gillian Jacobs, Zazie Beets, and Walton Goggins, returning. The series received an early renewal from Amazon Prime, with a tentative release for early spring of 2027. Invincible was created by Robert Kirkman.
Crime thriller Your Friends & Neighbors returns with its second season and clinches the top spot at AppleTV this week. Jon Hamm returns as former hedge fund manager Andrew “Coop” Cooper, as well as Amanda Peet as his ex-wife, Mel. James Marsden joins the cast as Owen Ashe, an eccentric billionaire and new neighbor of Coop. Ashe is a major disrupter who seems to see through Coop’s innocent-act, putting his double-life at risk. The season premiere earned great reviews, with critics noting improvements across the board: higher stakes, sharper writing, and increased self-awareness are all present, and have viewers excited at the season’s set-up with Ashe as a potential cat-and-mouse antagonist. Marsden is praised explicitly for his high-energy, delightfully unsettling portrayal and screen chemistry with Hamm, testing his social composure through a series of double-entendres and plausible deniability. New episodes release on AppleTV every Friday at 9PM eastern time. Your Friends & Neighbors was created by Jonathan Tropper.
Fans of Star Wars: The Clone Wars will be excited to see a new similar series Star Wars: Maul- Shadow Lord dethrone Love Story after a successful premiere on April 6th. The animated series features a stylized deep dive into the beloved villain from The Phantom Menace. The new story is set shortly after Revenge of the Sith but before A New Hope, and sees Darth Maul attempt to rebuild his criminal empire through a sci-fi noir lens. Maul is voiced by Sam Witwer, (fans of the videogame Star Wars: The Force Unleashed will remember him as Vader’s protege, Starkiller) and his apprentice Devon Izarra is voiced by Gideon Adlon. While Maul showcases the slightly more cartoony art style of its predecessors, it’s particularly gritty, and perhaps the closest the franchise has come to “R-Rated” material, pulling no punches with brutal violence and Peaky Blinders-like atmosphere. Series creator Dave Filoni actually cites 1995’s Heat as a major source of inspiration. Maul- Shadow Lord has already officially been greenlit for a second season, and new episodes air every Monday with a season finale set for “Star Wars Day”, May 4th.
